Ghee, spice and everything nice ...
Bye-bye boring breakfasts. This chunky, chai-spiced granola smells and tastes outrageously indulgent, but is secretly good for you - filled with protein, fibre, minerals and healthy fats (thanks to the generous amount of nuts, seeds, and of course, OMGhee). This bowl of nourishing deliciousness is most definitely worth getting out of bed for!
Made for gifting
In the spirit of the season, granola also happens to make the perfect gift: neighbours, teachers, friends and family would all be delighted to receive a jar (and we’ve heard that many like to hide their jars from the rest of the family!)
Kickstart your healthy new year
This recipe makes a generous amount, so after your thoughtful gift-giving, there’ll still be plenty left for you as the tastiest way to kickstart your healthy new year.
Enjoy simply with your favourite dairy or plant-based milk, or bling it up with yoghurt and berries.
Beyond breakfast
The greatest superpower of this granola? It goes way beyond breakfast. Sprinkle it on top of yoghurt or ice-cream for an instant dessert, layer it with fruit and yoghurt in pretty glasses for a fancier dessert, or enjoy it by the sneaky handful to get you through the mid-afternoon slump (we do!).
It’s a nutty one
We’ve included lots of different nuts and seeds in the granola because that’s what we had in the pantry and it makes the granola very festive. You can use any nuts and seeds you prefer or have on hand, adding up to the 3-cup total.
Ingredients
- 3 cups rolled oats
- 3 cups unsweetened coconut flakes
- 1 cup buckwheat
- ½ cup pepitas (pumpkin seeds)
- ½ cup sunflower seeds
- ½ cup hemp seeds
- ½ cup walnuts, roughly chopped
- ½ cup pecans, roughly chopped
- ½ cup almonds, roughly chopped
- ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon ground cloves
- A few twists black pepper
- 90g OMGhee, melted
- ¼-⅓ cup maple syrup (depending on how sweet you’d like it)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Directions
Mix all the dry ingredients in a very large bowl.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted ghee, maple syrup and vanilla.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir very well to coat all the dry ingredients with the gheelicious mix.
Line 3 large baking trays with compostable baking paper. Spread the mixture evenly between the trays. Bake at 140ºC fan-forced for 30 minutes, rotating and lightly stirring the trays every 10 minutes until crisp and lightly golden. (The less you stir, the chunkier your granola will be.)
Cool on your kitchen counter, where the granola will become even crisper.
Enjoy a few handfuls as the cook’s reward before storing in a large airtight container, or filling glass jars for gift-giving.

Recipe Note
Chai or chocolate?
We made this recipe with sweet chai spices: cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves – and a twist of black pepper if you dare. But you can use any spices you have on hand, OR indulge your chocolate cravings instead, replacing the spices with 3 tablespoons of cocoa or cacao powder. Perhaps make it both ways - and let us know your favourite?
